We are Dalal and Amani from Amman, Jordan. By profession we are teachers and Arabic-English translators and in our spare time we like to hang out and write media content to share with you our language and culture. We are passionate about creating Arabic language learning resources that reflect our personal experiences of the Levantine dialect and culture.

Through our podcast you hear our views on and experiences of everything ranging from quaint Arab traditions to daily, mundane concerns. Each podcast episode is accompanied with audio script and exercises in the form of a lesson plan. You can train your ear to some spoken Levantine Arabic or you could extend it into an Arabic language mini-class. The choice is yours!

The methods and approaches used to teach Arabic have been evolving rapidly over the years (especially in the last century) in order to respond to a vast growing number of people interested in learning Arabic.
الطرق والأساليب المستخدمة في تعليم اللغة العربية تطورت بسرعة على مر السنين (خاصة في القرن الماضي) عشان نتجاوب مع الأعداد الي عم بتزيد من الأشخاص المهتمين بتعلم اللغة العربية.
While there is more focus on teaching spoken dialects these days, it's not unusual to see a mixture of approaches (old and new) still used because students have to learn a variety of spoken Arabic (to converse with people) as well as Modern Standard Arabic (to understanding formal contexts).
ومع إنو صار التركيز أكبر على تدريس اللهجات المنطوقة هاي الأيام، إلا أنو ممكن نشوف مزيج من الأساليب (القديمة والجديدة) اللي بعدها مستخدمة، وهادا لأنه الطلاب لازم يتعلموا مجموعة متنوعة من كلمات اللغة العربية المنطوقة (ليقدرو يحكو مع الناس) بالإضافة إلى اللغة العربية الفصحى الحديثة (ليفهمو السياقات الرسمية).
In teaching Modern Standard Arabic, the classical method of language learning is popular. Learners analyze grammar structures and memorize vocabulary lists. They depend on translating the original language into the target language to deepen their understanding. There is little focus on developing oral ability since Arabs don’t speak Modern Standard Arabic in their daily lives. Spoken MSA is mostly used for formal purposes.
في تدريس اللغة العربية الفصحى الحديثة، بعدها الطريقة الكلاسيكية لتعلم اللغة منتشرة. يعني، بيدرس الطلاب قواعد وإعراب وبيحفظو قوائم بالمفردات. وبيعتمدو على ترجمة اللغة الأصلية إلى اللغة الهدف لتعميق فهمهم. وبيعتبر التركيز على تطوير القدرات الشفهية قليل لأنو العرب بطلو يحكو بالغة العربية الفصحى الحديثة. وفي الحياة اليومية، بيستخدم العرب .اللغة العربية الفصحى المنطوقة بس للأغراض الرسمية.
A classical approach is not ideal to learn spoken Arabic because MSA grammar structures are not comprehensively applied in dialects. Hence, Arabic teachers resort to modern communicative language teaching approaches to teach varieties of spoken Arabic. The focus is on helping learners to communicate well and appropriately in different real- life situations.
وطريقة التدريس الكلاسيكية مش مثالية لتعلم اللغة العربية المنطوقة لأنو تراكيب قواعد اللغة العربية الفصحى ما بتسنخدم بشكل شامل في اللهجات المنطوقة. وكمان، بيلجأ المدرسين لاستخدام مناهج تدريس اللغة اللي بتعلم التواصل عشان يدرسو أنواع مختلفة من اللغة العربية المنطوقة. وبالحقيقة، لازم يكون التركيز على مساعدة المتعلمين على التواصل بشكل جيد .ومناسب في مواقف الحياة الواقعية المختلفة.
Learners use language in a practical and functional way to communicate meaning. Having said that, this approach becomes problematic for teaching listening, reading and writing skills because the grammatical structures in spoken Arabic are considered inferior to MSA and not really material to be taught. So, you see it is a challenge for teacher and student to teach as well as learn it.
بيستخدم الطلاب اللغة بطريقة عملية لتوصيل المعنى. بس مع الأسف، هاي الطريقه بتسبب مشاكل في تدريس مهارات الاستماع والقراءة والكتابة لأن التراكيب النحوية في اللغة العربية المنطوقة ما إلها نفس القيمة باللغة العربية الفصحى، وفعلياً ما في منهج لتدريس القواعد باللهجات العامية. يعني بهاي الطريقة .في صعوبة على المدرس والطالب كمان.
A (old) classical approach is inadequate for teaching spoken Arabic and a (new) communicative language approach becomes inadequate for listening, reading and writing, because how do you teach that if you think it is “wrong”? Once a spoken variety of Arabic becomes documented text, its educational value is questioned and very carefully approached.
أسلوب التدريس الكلاسيكي القديم مش مناسب لتدريس اللغة العربية المنطوقة، وبنفس الوقت، استخدام أسلوب لغوي جديد لتدريس المحادثة مش مناسب للاستماع والقراءة والكتابة، لأنك كيف بدك تدرس هادا الأسلوب إذا بتعتقد إنو "غلط"؟ ولما تتحول مجموعة متنوعة من مواد المحادثة باللغة العربية لنصوص مكتوبة، بيتشكك بقيمتها التعليمية ولازم يكون .تدريسها كتير حذر.
We write content based on our expertise of methods and approaches in second language acquisition. Our content is in spoken Levantine Arabic. Our texts are recorded and transcribed and include a set of skill-based exercises.

For lower-level learner we think that a classical approach of teacher-centered learning is most effective because you need someone to get give you written as well as oral feedback. You can benefit from our learning material if you are at a higher- elementary and intermediate level. We ask learners to discover language on their own and become autonomous learners. Our learning material is beneficial for learners who already have a base in the language, as it encourages them to use their existing knowledge to work things out.
بالنسبة للمتعلمين الي مستواهم مبتدأ، بنعتقد أن الأسلوب الكلاسيكي للتعلم المتمحور حول المعلم هو الأكثر فعالية لأنو الطلاب بهادا المستوى بكونو بحاجة لشخص يقدملهم ملاحظات مكتوبة وشفوية. وبيقدر يستفيد من موادنا التعليمية طلاب المستوى الابتدائي العالي والمستوى المتوسط. وبنطلب من المتعلمين إنو يكتشفوا اللغة بأنفسهم وأنو يصيرو متعلمين مستقلين. وموادنا التعليمية مفيدة للمتعلمين اللي عندهم خلفية بالغة العربية، لأنو رح يتشجعوا يستخدمو .معلوماتهم ليتعلمو أشياء جديدة
